Travelling Mail

Travelling Mail

You may have stumbled across this blogpost because you have received a piece of 'travelling mail' and are unsure what to do with it..

Or potentially you've heard about travelling mail in the happy mail community, and want to learn more? Maybe even take part?

Below you should find everything you need to know about travelling mail and where to begin if you do want to get involved!

Disclaimer: I will never take credit for beginning 'travelling mail', it was about way before I set up the group. I simply created a space and some printable sheets to make the process a little easier for people to take part.

What is Travelling Mail?

Travelling Mail is a type of snail mail (mail sent through the postal service, not virtually/online) that travels around multiple participants, and then makes it way back to you.

You set it off by sending it to a penpal, or to someone on the Travelling Mail Facebook group. They will add their name, date and country/location. Then send it onto another person who will go through the exact same process, and so on.

When it's full up and there's no more room for other people to add to it, the last person will get in touch with you to send it on it's last journey home!

How can I get involved?

The best place to begin would be joining the facebook group, as you will see how other members go about taking part.

A little list of the things you will need are below:

  • Some Postcards or a Notebook to set off
  • The printable info sheets, which can be found on the Facebook group or below.
  • Some sort of washitape/tape to attach your sheets to your postcard/notebook
  • Postage stamps
  • Access to the Facebook group, or a penpal to send your travelling mail to

Once you've printed the info sheet off, attach it to the edge of your postcard with some washitape (see photos in the Facebook group/this youtube video for examples). Fill out your info on the sheet, and on the postcard itself so it has it's starting location.

Then pop a photo in the facebook group (or send it on to a penpal) and hopefully you will see it again in a few months/years!

Some things to remember:

  • If you are under the age of 18 please make sure you have got permission to share your address before taking part in anything like this.
  • his type of mail can sometimes go missing, it happens unfortunately. But at the end of the day it's only a small notebook or a postcard, and a bit of postage you are loosing out on. So if it happens, it happens!
  • Please always send travelling mail in an envelope.
  • If you are unsure of how much something will cost to post, always, always, always, ask at your local Post Office or take a look online! It will save a lot of faffing in the long run.

I hope this all makes sense, if anything confuses you though, please ask!
